About

SEREN is one of Wales’ foremost social enterprises, established in 1996 with the primary aim of offering professional support for people with learning disabilities in the south of Gwynedd.

Based in the former slate quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog it has developed over the years and is now the area’s second biggest employer. Since its establishment the company, a registered charity and company limited by guarantee, has pushed as many boundaries and frontiers as possible to provide its service users with services and facilities that have enhanced their quality of life. An integral part of this has been the development of a number of commercial projects that offer people worthwhile work opportunities, helping them to develop self confidence and communication skills.

It offers both day care as well as domiciliary support, provided by professionally trained staff to QCF Levels 2 and 3 in health and social care.

Seren’s main philosophy and culture is that the service users are paramount and everything else should revolve around them. It is involved in a number of partnerships, local, regional and national. The company works very closely with both the social services departments of Gwynedd and Conwy Councils. It is registered with the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) that regularly inspects the performance and quality of the care provided. 50 service users receive regular support.

Seren is firmly rooted and fully integrated within the local community.

Blaenau Ffestiniog was once a thriving slate quarrying community but with the demise of that industry the population declined and with it came the usual economic problems. The company is playing its part in the economic and social regeneration of the area providing employment for 60 people. The vast majority of these people live locally with over a £1million between their salaries, and goods and services purchased locally by Seren, invested in the Blaenau Ffestiniog area . The town is rapidly becoming a rapidly growing outdoor activities centre that now draws visitors from all over Europe, boasting some of the most ambitious tourism projects in the north of Wales. Seren has ensured that its service users are an integral part of this vibrant developing community.
